Joshua: Before the Battle

Joshua 5 shows us that crossing into a new season doesn't mean we're immediately ready for what comes next. Before Jericho, God reminds Israel who they are, what He has done for them, and who is ultimately in charge. Through circumcision, Passover, and the encounter with the Commander of the Lord's army, God prepares their hearts before He prepares them for battle. Sometimes God wants to do something in us before He does something through us.

1. What stood out to you most about the fact that Israel had crossed the Jordan but still had things God wanted to do in them before Jericho?
2. Why do you think God dealt with Israel's identity and covenant relationship before He dealt with their enemies?
3. What are some ways we can become so focused on "what's next" that we overlook what God may be trying to do in us right now?
4. Which is easier for you: remembering what God has done, trusting Him for what He's going to do, or surrendering your plans to Him? Why?
5. Joshua asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” How can we fall into the same mindset—asking God to get behind our plans rather than asking what He wants from us?
6. If you were completely honest with yourself, what might God be asking you to surrender before you move into your next season?
